A Look at India’s Increasing Divorce Rate

Americans are surprisingly getting divorced at the rate of 50%. Half of all couples are dissolving their marriages according to statistics. Even though Christianity, the main religion in the U.S., does not condone divorce, we have seen the incidence continue to rise. This doesn’t mean that just Christians are being affected. This is affected people throughout the world.

Research has been done to study the effects divorce has had on Indian Hindu culture. Until 1955, marriage was forbidden in the culture. After the passage of this law, people could be granted a divorce for various reasons such as adultery and cruelty. According to statistics, after the passage of the law, about 2% of the population between 25 and 39 got a divorce.

Researchers have used various statistics in order to study the effects of divorce. About 95% of divorces happened in cases of people younger than 35. This could be because the younger people don’t feel as bound by the ancient traditions as older people do or that the change in the cultural climate is affecting their attitudes. It was also learned that those with higher education were more likely to divorce than those who had not attended college. As far as the suggestions presented by this evidence, researchers were hesitant to draw any concrete conclusions.

When it comes to the divorce rate, occupation was another factor. People are more likely to divorce when they work around members of the opposite sex more. Only a low percentage of Indian women have joined the workforce, though, because of the fact that male members of their families will not permit it. This means that women usually can’t afford to get a divorce even if they wanted to. In the affluent Brahmin caste, divorce is much more common.

Most marriages in the country are arranged by family members. In India, courtships is something that isn’t even considered. Instead, family members seek out prospective mates based on many other criteria. Before the nuptials, most couples don’t even get to spend much time with each other. Many Americans make the mistake of going into the marriage expecting too much. Doc No. 34Sdlhgsdl -sds
